Martial arts, for everyone — no matter where you live or what you can afford.
Traditional martial arts training is gated — by geography, by money, and by whatever happens to be taught in your town.
Want to train Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Wing Chun? That's three separate gyms and easily $200+ a month. Live somewhere rural, or somewhere the art you love simply isn't taught? You're out of luck. Shadow in Motion exists to tear those gates down — to put a real, structured path in front of anyone willing to put in the reps.
We give you the styles, a personalized training plan, structured real-world testing prep, and a community — for a fraction of a single dojo membership. Not a watered-down sampler: each art sits on its own authentic belt ladder, honoring the tradition it comes from.
A custom path across 12+ arts, each on its real organizational belt ladder — built to your experience, schedule, and goals.
A 24/7 guide that answers questions, explains techniques, and adapts your training to you.
Know exactly what each rank requires, drill it, and film yourself demonstrating it when you're ready.
Forums and local meetup groups to train, spar, and talk martial arts & self-defense with real people near you.
We're clear about what the digital sensei is: a guide, a coach, a patient resource that's always available — especially if there's no dojo nearby to walk into. It meets you exactly where you are.
The goal was never to replace the mat, or a great human instructor. The goal is to get you to the mat prepared — confident, informed, and knowing what you're doing when you step in.
Matt — Founder of Shadow in Motion
Black Sash & Apprentice Instructor · Rank across 10+ martial arts · U.S. Air Force veteran · Former MMA & Tough Man competitor
Matt has trained martial arts since he was eight years old. At forty-three, it has been his entire life. He holds black-belt and instructor-level rank across more than ten arts — Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, Kali and Sayoc, Jeet Kune Do and Jun Fan, Wing Chun, Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Uechi-Ryu and American Kempo Karate, Judo, and BJJ. At the school where he came up, students didn't grade one art at a time — they trained and tested all of them together until they earned their Black Sash and Apprentice Instructor. He also wrestled from seventh grade through high-school varsity, served in the U.S. Air Force, and competed in MMA and Tough Man events — and did well in them.
Then he got sick. Crohn's disease — and the surgeries that came with it — forced him off the mat and out of the cage, a fight he still carries today. But the arts had already given him what he would need to face it: an indomitable spirit and a mind-over-body connection that carries him through the hard days. It is the reason "Back to Black" was never a slogan to him — it's his own road back, and the road he built this program to help others walk.
Matt never stayed in one lane. He cross-trained across striking, grappling, and weapons, guided by Bruce Lee's principle — absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own. He has had to defend himself for real, more than once against more than one person, so he knows what actually holds up when it counts. But everything he was taught began with humility: avoid the fight, talk your way out, never brag. If it truly comes to it, act decisively, do no more than it takes to get out safely, and walk away.
That experience is what shaped Shadow in Motion — the patient, honest guide he wishes he'd had when he was starting over, built to meet students wherever they are, whatever they're coming back from, wherever they live, and whatever they can afford.
"Train hard, stay humble, and I'll see you on the mat."
This is just the beginning. Our vision is to partner with real dojos, gyms, and martial arts organizations so your training here connects to the real world:
We don't hand out belts. We prepare you to earn them — and connect you to the people who can grant them. (Partnership program coming as we build these relationships. If you represent an organization interested in partnering, we'd love to talk.)
Your first week is on us. Build your custom path, meet the digital sensei, and find your people.
